OBITUARY - Paul Hiley

The Dales Council Cricket League is saddened to hear of the premature death of Adel opener Paul Hiley, who died a week ago after a tragic accident whilst on a walking holiday in Austria. Paul was a well loved and respected member of Adel Cricket Club whose enthusiasm for the game never waned, and his dedication and commitment to our junior cricketers was an inspiration. His highest score this season was a match winning 74 away at Mount.

Paul leaves a wife Susan, son Ian and daughter Rachel. His funeral will be held at Moortown Baptist Church on Thursday 12th August 2004 at 2.20pm.

14 June 2004 - League Success

A strong representative side took on the Whixley Evening League in the first round of the Leeds Area Cricket Council Knockout Cup on Sunday at Tofts Road home of Pudsey St. Lawrence C.C. and run out comfortable winners. Rodley's Mark Allinson (3-24) and Stuart Liddell (3-27) were the main destroyers but were ably assisted by a tidy spell by Mohammed Nawaz (0-26) of Baildon Meths. His Club team mate Mohammed Abbas picked up three catches before the Whixley League closed on 155-8 off their 40 overs.

In reply the Dales Council were quickly on the back foot after losing opener Mark Scaithe (Pudsey Congs) caught sharply at first slip without scoring off the impressive bowling of former Crompark paceman Steve Taylor. New Farnley's Tim Oram joined Captain Gary Walton (Rodley) at the crease and together they put on 91 for the second wicket. Walton's impressive driving was complimented by Oram's ferocious strokeplay. Most of the decent sized crowd at one time or another found themselves dodging the ball, leaving Oram's bat on the way out of the ground.  One huge six broke a roof tile close to the ridge of a nearby house before bouncing into the back garden. When Walton finally departed for 27, Oram had already secured his half century.

Intzhar Mahmood (Baildon Meths) & Harcharan Seerha (Leeds Sikh) enjoyed some lusty blows before Nawaz (16 not out) joined Oram (79 not out) to secure an easy win with still 14 overs still available. A full scorecard can be found here.

The League now are away to the Pontefract League in a fixture likely to be scheduled for the 11 July in the second round. Before that though is an exciting trip on Sunday 27 June to Beverley C.C. to take on the Hull/East Yorkshire Alliance League in the first round of the Yorkshire Inter-League Knock Out Competition.

OBITUARY - Terry Davies

LOCAL cricket is in mourning following the death of stalwart Terry Davies.
Davies, a veteran of many years trawling the local leagues, passed away on Saturday aged 73.

For over 50 years, Davies was as much a fixture of the summer sport scene as the fixture lists themselves and he was bamboozling batsmen around the leagues of Yorkshire with his trademark leg spin. His playing career started with Holbeck, who won the Hepworth Cup an astonishing eight times during his time there in the 1950s. From there he had a season with Adel before joining Leeds Co-op after a stint in the Army.

Davies went on to play for 18 clubs including Pudsey St Lawrence and wound up his career at Leeds Police. A regular at the Police's Gledhow Lane club, Davies played his final first XI game in 2001 before retiring from the sport the following year after helping out with the second XI at the ripe old age of 72. Davies, also a keen Yorkshire supporter, never kept a record of his achievements, but he never forgot June 18 1969 when he finished with figures of 15.1-4-29-10 for Leeds Co-op against Rothwell. Those close to him claim he took around 3,400 wickets in his career. Davies leaves a widow, Pat, sons Wayne and Lee and daughter Samantha.

The funeral will be at Rawdon Crematorium on Monday at 12.20.
